Default PS rack and tie rods...

Resealing my spare power steering rack (waiting for package from Travis!) and doing tie rods as part of my required winter work soon. Spare rack (assuming everything is straight on it) will go on my car and new tie rod assemblies are going on in place of bent rods/loose ends (and hopefully keeping my alignment somewhat close). Any hints or tips would greatly be appreciated for either.

TIA

Hint #1: Presoak overnight in PB blaster and use a pickle-fork to separate the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.

No amount of hammering would get mine out.

Hint #2: This is a good time to check ball joints for looseness. I didn't and the alignment guy pointed out one that had excess play in it.

At least they're easily replaced on the early cars with steel control. Not quite as easy for the 85.5 and up cars with alloy arms.

Ball joint repair kit also on the way from Travis. One of the boots is ripped and alignment guy said it was a little loose. So I'll be doing both of those as well.

A decent heavy duty gear puller (2 jaw, 3 jaw won't work) will pop the tie rod ends as well. That's what I use since you're less likely to rip that rubber boot.
