Default Wheel offset question (I know, I know....)

I have an early offset car, and I understand the whole spacer thing if I want late offset wheels.

Early offset cars take wheels that are 23.3.

My question is, would 17.7 offset wheels fit? I assume that means that there is even more "meat" inside the wheel, and that possibly the wheel may stick out farther at the edge than a 23.3 wheel? If they are 17's, should I worry about brake clearance over my S4 calipers?

Thanks in advance, I'm trying to get my head around this but can't quite figure it out.

Tifo:
I have a set of 7.5 and 9x17 Cup IIs for my 911. I put them on the 944 from time to time. The 9x17 rears are ET 15 I think and they fit fine and fill out the wheel well nicely. They will clear your S4 brakes easily since they clear the big reds on my 911.

I know, this offset thing is confusing. I learned about it the hard way when I bought a set of 951 late offset Phone dials for my old 83.

Most 17's should be OK with S4 calipers, but I can't promise anything.
17.7mm shouldn't be a problem but you might be a little more limited in tire size than you would be with a 23.3mm offset wheel. The rear should not be an issue, my 16x8 rear is 10.3mm offset and I have no problems with 225 width (and enough room that the next set will be 245 wide). You'd have an extra 6mm to play with so you should be able to go at least 255 width before even thinking about rolling the fenders.
The fronts might be a little tight, lots of neg camber will help .

OK, thanks! The wheels I am looking at are 17X8 front, 17X9 rear with 225/45 fronts and 255/40 rear. I've got no lips on the rear fenders, they have been ground off and repainted to make plenty of room for my other set of 17's (C2 copies with 23.3 offset and same tire sizes). Fronts are already rolled for clearance as well.

tifo, any new info on when you want to meet up? Do you want to buy some 17" twists?

Kevin,

Looks like this upcoming weekend is no good due to family commitments and Pete's housewarming affair. Want to shoot for next weekend, Saturday late morning maybe? Work right now is busy and I have no hope of getting any time off during the week......
