Does anyone know if it is possible to get original keys from Porsche?

I'm assuming that I only have a valet key to my car because the key will only open the doors; doesn't work in the trunk lock. Since half the time I can't get the hatch open with the trunk release button in the car either, it is next to impossible to use my car to haul anything. What a pain! I'd really like to get a key that opens all the locks, but when I asked the dealer, they didn't seem to think it was possible. Anyone have any experience with this?

 

I hope you get a response, I have the same question about keys. Also, are the door keys and latch key different. If so, is it possible to get them keyed the same.

 

Hmmm. I never thought about the possiblity that they might be two separate keys. Anyone know anything about this?

FWIW, my key opens both doors and the trunk. It also starts the car...

My keys also work in all spots as well.

You can order a brand new key from Porsche....it's about $50. For a freakin' key. Brand new lighted keyhead with it though!

My only problem is that when I got it that my locks are worn and it wouldn't work in some of them (most notably the ignition and driver's door where the key was used the most). I bought some blanks and had them cut to match (have to find a place that will like Ace Hardware...new key cutting machines have to have specific sizes and the Porsche keys wouldn't fit). I then had to file some on a couple of those to get them to work in all of the locks, but now I have my original key and 2 backups.

Also, I'd wonder if either the lock in the back just needs some graphite or something put in it and work that a lot with the key going in and out or other lubricants designed for locks. Might be just hard to turn because of non-use and such. Could have also been replaced by a PO who forgot to give you the new key?

Mine's same key all around also, but lately the hatch takes a little wiggle before it'll turn. Maybe the lock cylinder wears out faster than other cylinders in the car. A locksmith should be able to repair the cylinder if this is the case. A locksmith would also be able to "re-key" the hatch if your's is different than the doors.

 

I guess it's possible that my trunk lock is just stuck from non-use. I was assuming that I had a valet key and that's why it wouldn't work. I will try some graphite to see if that will loosen it.

My dealer wanted $135 for a new ignition key!! Said it had to be computerized. I said forget it.

 

I have both sets of keys for my car. The "master" keys and the valet key. Master keys works in all locks (doors, ignition, hatch, glove box). Valet only works in the doors and ignition.

If you're lucky (like me) you have the original metal tags that have the key codes stamped into them. I suppose only a few people still have those.

Yes, just take a copy of your registration with the VIN number on it to your dealer and they can send off for the key. As mentioned, mine cost me about $50. They have to see the registration (or they darned well better be asking to!) to prove that you own the car. Takes them a couple of weeks to send off for it. They have a master archive somewhere that keeps the info on all of these keys and how to have them made to work. Don't be surprised if it doesn't work right off if your current key has a lot of wear on it. Some graphite in the locks on mine helped, but I didn't want to file on the master, so I got the dupes made and filed on them to get working ones.

Thanks a lot for the info. I'm surprised, though, since when I asked the dealer about getting a new master key, they didn't seem to know anything about it! But I will ask again; perhaps I wasn't talking to the right person.
