Now, when you guys say idle @ 30 mins, do you rev the engine at all or just flat idle for the whole time?

I idled it for about 20 minutes with a quart of ATF and a quart less of oil. emptied that, filled it up with half a quart of ATF and the rest oil, drove about 10 miles, emptied it. Filled about a quarter quart and the rest oil, ran that for 100 miles, emptied it. filled all oil, ran for about 200 miles, emptied it, filled oil, ran for 500 miles emptied it, filled mobil one. After seeing that (it was oil coller seals, this is an old thread btw) I changed rod bearings as well.

It sure is. I think I am the culprit for its having come back to the surface. I was researching the ole ATF trick this morning, and voted in the poll.... I think that did it! Sorry about that!

Note: while I'm at it I would just like to say that I generally like milkshakes, but after seeing these horrid milkshake pictures, I hope I never am cursed with one of the 951 variety.

I use the ATF trick every oil change, and every change the lifters get quiter. The car sat for 9 months before I bought it, with old, horribly filthy oil in it, and the lifters have been loud as hell ever since.
The first time I used it, I let the car get 1 litre low on oil, topped it up with ATF, and drove it around 2000km's before draining it out.
Ever since then, I fill it 1 litre over fill (or less if it's lost some oil), drive it for the day, and drain it out that night. I don't think there is much risk just putting around town a little over full.

mine is a daily driver, avg speed on the autobahn is 130 mph, will adding atf be disastrous or will it be fine?
i really have noisy lifters on the 1st 2-3 min. of start up after a bout 4-8 hrs of sitting.
work is apprx 25 km. and autobahn distance is about 20km of that 25.
any thoughts?

well, i call it insurance, i dont enjoy things such as spun rod bearings... I also put in new ones after this. i dont need that **** in there, so pay en extra 20 bucks now, and an hour of my time now, and dont rebuild a damn motor later... why is everything you say negative lately?

I had never heard of this before. Let me get this straight though, you guys are talking about running the ATF for a set amount of time. Nobody is running it constantly right?

Not the article, but some graphic demostration of the cleaning properties of a pretty sludged up motor.

Not to advertise the stuff, but I've used AutoRx before on a Volvo with 260k miles, it did get rid of allot of deposits around the cam shafts, also during the rinse phase of the treatment allot of sludge was observed during the oil change.

hello evveryone, well a coincidence, after reading this post, i spoke to a mechanic from Lockheed Martin w/c is contracted to service our equipment that returned from Iraq nad they are using dex3, atf or equivalent to clean uout the interior components of the equipment.
Wow, so far a lot of junk is coning out and the generators (5 and 10 kw) seem to have an increased % on it's load tests.
maybe with enough persuasion and less fear i'd be more willing to do it on mine since i'm due for an oil change next month.
shouldi just run it for a few min or miles or let it idle?
my current oil reading is in between the notches on the dip stick. should i fill it with atf to the full mark?

What I remember is run 1/2 QT ATF for a 30-60 minute run, then flush IIRC. FWIW- I've never tried it and was wondering who had and their results-
