Ahhh.. the old ATF trick.
I'll be changing my Mobil1 next week. I have heard about 500 miles or equivalent runtime for ATF in the oil.
Can I let it sit in the oilpan for a week (approx 150 miles) without pitting the main bearings? Any limitations to the old ATF trick? I may let it sit in my oilpan for a week.
bearing scoring or pitting possible?
Let the fracus begin...

Another mechanic-in-a-can solution.
Store shelves are lined with them because many people will try anything to avoid a trip to their mechanic. IMO, few are effective.
I've had noisy lifters get quiet by themelves without adding anything.

I digress.... It has been widely rumored that adding ATF to your oil will dissolve varnish and junk on your valves, cam, etc. I've never done it but wanted some feedback prior to trying it. I do use Techron every 3-4 months and it seems to make a significant response difference at the pedal.
If it sounds too good to be true- it probably is. That's the reason for the post.

Hey Brandon- How's UofI? did you hear about the kid jumping off the 6'th story parking garage?? (yep, a family friend- sheesh.)
Other than that it's good. Almost done building our FSAE car, so we'll be driving that soon. Stole the off-road car from the other team the other night too, that was interesting !

ATF is supposed to make seals swell up stopping leaks as well as cleaning out the deposits. I used it to clean up the engine after about 3 gallons of coolant mixed with my oil. Took about 5 changes but it got almost all the water out. I now am running Mobil 1 10W30 (first time) and the car leaks a little bit. I am going to try some Mobil 1 15W50 to see if that helps the leaks. If not I may try 5 qts of oil and 1 qt of ATF to see if the leaking stops.

Just use a engine flush after having the oil cooler seal replaces (oil/water mixing)
As far as the ATF trick is concerned on the seals/cleaning lifter etc........i don't think i would go for that........

I tried a can of something a few years ago (I think made by Gunk) that said it cleaned out noisy lifters and much to my surprise...it worked!! They were quieter. It said to add it, drive 150 miles, then change the oil. If I were gonna do the ATF trick, I'd use a 1/2 quart and follow these directions.
