Hey Guys, my stepdad (pretty much my dad since I was 3) was talkin to me the other day and said that factory turbo cars do not need mufflers in NY...true? He's been a state trooper for 25 years so I dont think he is pulling it out of his ***...

if its true, any idea why?

I kinda doubt that. Your car would be obnoxiously loud without one, for both the occupants and those outside.

 

The dodge neon srt4 dose not have a muffler. It dose however have cats which cut down the sound allot compared to straight pipes.

 

I don't know about the law itself, as here in Cali it's really a matter of decible output. It's true that many turbo vehicles do not require mufflers because the turbo acts as one. The Chevy Cyclone did not have a muffler if I recall.

Muffler's are simply to keep you inside the noise pollution law, and have nothing to do with emissions. So as long as your car is quiet enough, it does not require a muffler. Most turbo cars can go without a muffler, and still be quieter than a Honda with a fart cannon.

You've listenned to my Quest run on your computer downstairs with the good speakers, right? That's with a full 3" exhaust system, and a straight through muffler on it. It's still a heck of alot more quiet than most V8 sport cars. I'd bet it still would still put out less noise than most V8 cars if it didn't have a muffler at all.

 

I will tell you one thing, 951's without a muffler and a 3" open exhaust are really loud! Not as loud as an N/A RX-7 with no mufflers, but still really loud.

 

damn...i wanted to have no muffler...
