what size wheel do all you have?
i have 225/50/15s on my 15x7 cookie cutters and someone on the List recently told me I'd been better off with stock...215/60/15

he's not using them anymore and 2 more of those would be cheaper then 4 of anything else

I have a set of Bridgestone RE950' on 215/60H-15 and I love them. I had a set of Michelin XGT H4 same size and they were pretty good...I got 50k out of them but man where they bald! I do prefer the Bridgestones over the Michelins and they are less money! Hope this helps.

G009 info @ tirerack , Never tried 'em, but they turned up in a search for 215/60-15. Only H rated so might not be the best idea for track use but at least adequate for sane highway use.
Re; 225/50-15,
Smaller diameter equals lower effective gear ratio, this gives you slightly better acceleration, it also leads to more shifting, shifting slows you down more than you gain in acceleration. This is my experience from autox use of this size anyway. DE use will vary, as will street use, but I don't consider lower gearing to automatically equal good. On the street, the smaller diameter will increase speedo error. All in all this has it's pro's and con's, IMO the con's outweigh the pro's.

Oh yeah, the smaller diameter lower's the car a hair but also fills the wheelwells less.

Ok, I see. I was going to go with the 225/50's so I could get some S-03's, not for lower gearing or anything. My speedo is only a reasonable estimate of my speed anyway, so that doesn't matter much.

Mr.Avionics, I have Goodyear GT HR's on my '97 Lexus ES 300 and like them. Wanted an all season tire with some performance. They have been on for about 4k now and corner well and do great in the rain.
Considered the new Yoko H4S too but they were just coming out.
I also had the Bridgestone RE 950's on my '92 Maxima SE 5 speed.
They handled very well but were not very good in snow. I know that's not your intention. I kept in touch with the guy who bought my car and asked how the 950's were holding up. He said they were wearing very well but as the tread wore they got louder and louder.
I am considering the AVS ES 100 for the p car.

I also have Bridgestone RE950 on 215/60 R15, but I'm only moderately happy: they are great on the street (nice in the summer, and decent in the snow), but bad in autocross. They don't hold well sideways in tight turns. Most 944 owners claim: "it's like riding on rails", but it's not true with these tires during hard cornering. It's partially the 60 aspect to blame, I think.

I got Goodyear Eagle F1's to replace my Pirelli P6000's. The Eagle F1's are so much better and they look perfect on a 944. Price is reasonable. Check Tire Rack's owner feedback on them.

FWIW, that's a really cheap price for Michelin XGTVs. Back when I bought my 83 you couldn't find XGTVs for less than $150 each. I remember paying $165 and that was ten years ago. Not to mention what you pay for Michelins in Europe...

I've had AVSs on the 944S2 and they're good tires, but Michelins will always be Michelins.

Stan, the factory recommendation for your car is V rated tires. They are much better performing, although significantly more expensive.

Specifically, the stock tire on the 1983 944 was the Michelin XGTV in P215/60 V15 size.

I've used H rated tires on the 83 for longevity and they last considerably longer but handle much worse. It really is more the tires' fault than anything else. Can't blame the car for cheap tires.

I changed the stock 215/60/15's on my 85.5 944 for 225/50/15's and liked them much better. The 215/60's look too tall and dated I guess. I put Falken Ziex 512's on it and they are a very good tire and they only cost me around $60 each. For a low price 225/50/15 take a look at them and the Yoko ES100. I don't know if the Bridgestone RE-750 is available in that size but it's also an excellent tire.
