Don't sweat it. Like I said, I'm not sure if the second cable is for cruise or automatic trasmission kickdown.

what would happen if i took out that idle regulator or whatever it is and bypassed it if it was an early engine? i would think that would be a good test.

just took another quick look in the greenhouse.. (because i thought i lost my oil plug changing the oil, and went and lokoed and it was there.)

i see the regulator that is underneath the intake manifold.. part number 0 280 140 501 ??? is that the one for the later car? if so, then is this other idle regulator valve screwing up the running of my car?

The best thing here, is follow the lines that come from it. Tell us where they go. That definately does not belong on a late motor, I just had my entire intake apart, and I never saw that valve.
That sounds like the right p/n for the late IACV, but I can't check that for you right now.
There are engine casting numbers, but where they are depends on the model of the engine. Check Clark's Garage, he has a list there (Somewhere) which tells you where to find the engine numbers, and what they mean. That will tell you for sure if you have an early engine.

Just checked. the one under the manifold (the right one) comes form the air intake boot, and goes from the unit to underneath the rear of the manifold, ot some blue looking joint, not sure what its all about. because the part that i have in the picture, comes from farther on the joint on the intake boot where the other ones tube comes from, and it goes to that air regulator and then back to teh blue thing under the back of the intake manifold. seems like they both do the same exact circuit, just going different areas on the engine.. but all end up the same place. if i clamp the hose to teh idle valve for the earlier car (from picture) nothing happens at all to the idle... any ideas?
