Default Um... What The Crap?!

What in the world?! Sorry been a rough day already, had someone important to me pass away and then open my hood to find this piece broken off my engine I assume due to vibration? So new covers are going to be added to my list 😭

I seemed to recall that piece on the 16V models are made of magnesium, and that kind of degradation happens with magnesium. Luckily, new ones are available:

Unfortunately, I don't think the cover is available. Tried to purchase one a couple of weeks ago from Paragon, reportedly NLA and not expected to have them made anymore.

Please - correct me if I am in error here.

There are a couple of listings on ebay for aluminum replacements made by rennbay. Rennbay doesn't show them on their website anymore.

Thank you... Looks like a used one will be the direction to take. Are the s2 ones magnesium as well? Any methods to keep it from corroding? Thanks guys.

From my understanding, it's a unique issue. The magnesium is porous and absorbs the vapors in the area...then it begins to swell - as it does, it begins to break down/crumble.

Magnesium has caused lots of problems over time. Saw it in aircraft too. I think 944Online sells an aluminum replacement set, front and back. About $300-400 I think. YMMV

So if a magnesium replacement is available, would seem to be a good idea to have it powder coated prior to installation to seal the pores in the metal.

Agree with @DSMblue , if you can powder or Cerakote it, you should stop any degradation due to the environment. You could probably also put on a conversion coating (using something like Sanchem) and that would help, too.

Good luck. I have some issues as well with my rear cover, but nothing like what you're showing.

Cheers

You know, magnesium parts of any kind always have problems like this. I wonder why they even use them on non-specialty (race) applications. It can't be worth the few grams of weight saved compared to aluminum.

That's the problem. The genuine ones are magnesium.
