Default Thermostat Gasket

I apologize for the dumb question, but I seem to be getting conflicting information. I just bought a new laso water pump, meyle thermostat, gasket, shim and snap ring. The combination is too fat to get the snap ring in the groove. The water pump is a new style with what supposed to be a new style thermostat. I got everything from the same source. Is there a thinner water thermostat seal??? Or does it tap in?

I went through this myself. There are two so-called thermostats, early and late. The only difference between the two is the gasket, that's it. You would think a new Laso pump would use the "late thermostat". The truth is there's only a gasket for the 5mm snap ring distance pumps and the 7mm snap ring distance pumps. When I did my pump a few years back I use a Laso pump with a 5mm gasket. It's not imperative to have a perfect water tight seal in there anyway. You just don't want the thermostat moving around in there. Infact I drilled a 3/32 hole in my thermostat to prevent thermo shock.
I recommend using a Wahler thermostat. The spring for the by-pass valve on other brands may be weaker and lead to overheating. Marc
