Default Cam and balance belt tension

87 NA…What is the preferred method for testing tension of the cam and balance shaft belts without using the special tool? The Clark’s Garage article seems to suggest that the tool MUST be used, but I have seen other write-ups using the “90 degree” method, or one method using a feeler gauge to test clearance between belts. I have the later setup with the spring loaded tension.

with the spring tensioner let the tensioner go fully "tight" and then do the 90* twist test on the upper run of belt (before you install the 46mm black idler). oftentimes you will need to slightly back off the tension and lock it down. that's it.

You're definitely on the right track with your questions. The link I'm posting here is an absolute MUST for hobbyists to serious mechanics who are new to the 944. It's a 3-part series and goes into detail about how to tension the belts byusing a credit card, spinning a pulley, plucking it like a guitar string, and more. Best yet, it's made by an active forum member, Van.

OK - Thanks for the info. Next problem is my adjuster seems to be frozen. I have loosened the circled bolt, but the tensioner will not budge. Even tried taking a wood block and hammer and pounded down where the yellow arrow is. Can these freeze over time? Do I loosen the "pivot" nut and stud to break it free?

you need to loosen that bolt, and the nut next to it (touching your yellow circle) to get it to pivot.

Yes thanks - I realized that late last night...I was following the Clarks Garage writeup and it mentions only loosening one bolt to allow it to pivot.

Thanks for the help.
