DME is the computer for your fuel injection and ignition timing. The KLR helps control boost. The turbo DME is not interchangeable with the n/a. Cost is all over the place, there are some on eBay as we speak, I'm selling a set right now ; ). The dealer is going to want huge money, or you could get one from a dismantler for somewhwere between the two.

Vertex sells rebuilt units at a somewhat reasonable price -- better than the dealer price anyway and guaranteed to work.

It's Vertexauto.com

I thought they were cheaper in the past, but they seem to sell the DME for $549. I seem to recall the parts counter guy at Parts Heaven in Hayward, CA once telling me that they also had a rebuilder for DME and KLR's. You may want to try them too.

How would you rebuild one of these? I'm wondering what it is they'd replace. Like someone rebuilding a TV or something???

There are some common areas that fail on these boxes. Cold solder joints with cracks can be identified and repaired. Blown-out ground-traces that got fried from bad block-grounds can be bridged with a new wire. Fried injector-driver transistor can be replaced, etc... Yea, it's like repairing a TV set, or a toaster.

I've bought and sold used good-condition DMEs for around $150 each, so I think that may be a fair market value for a used unit.
