Default Turbocharged ‘86 944 NA Champcar/Lemons Racecar

First a short introduction... My name is Jason and I've been messing around with 944's in one form or another for the last 20 years. Over the past 10 years I've been running a 944 in Champcar (Chumpcar) and 24 Hours of Lemons. The car started out as a car crusher rescue and has turned into a reasonably competitive racer. It now has over 400 racing hours on her. 20 of those are on the new turbo setup.

Here are the current specs / highlights:
- 1986 944 NA chassis
- 8v 944 NA motor
- Microsquirt ECU
- Ebay HX35 turbo

I just want to thank the 944 community for all the information you've put out there and support over the years. This invaluable resource made this car possible. Especially the "Practical Guide to megasquirting your 944" and "Summer build thread: Megasquirt and more..." by Dougs951s and Odonnell. Your threads were super helpful in sourcing all the parts, your maps were instrumental, THANK YOU!

As we picked her up (after I put a new junkyard head on her).

This is how she sits today:

Here's some close-ups of the turbo setup:

The early 928 Cast Iron Exhaust manifold made this possible!

Last year we started with the microsquirt install, here's the car normally aspirated, but under Microsquirt control.

Obligatory rats nest photo of the initial wiring setup.

Anyway, I'll be back to post some more pics and info about the car. And if you ever see us at the track, please stop by, we love this racing and are always willing to help out our fellow 944 racers!

- Jason

We are running very low boost (4 to 5lbs for now), but it is still a significant upgrade! We start making boost at 2,800 rpm are at full boost by 3,500rpm and it’s table flat through redline. There is almost no perceptible lag and IAT’s are very low. It’s made the car fun to drive again (it was getting old getting passed by miatas on the straights).

I highly recommend!
