While it could be something simple….
It might also be something real bad. I’d hold off driving (or even running it for that matter) until you’ve had the belts checked. My guess would be the rollers are going south. If one of them freezes up then it will strip the belt teeth and crash the valves.

I associate a whine with a loose balance shaft belt. Heard that sound before it broke and took out the timing belt. So I know that if I ever hear that sound again I will be taking off the belt cover and check. This whine sound also sounded similar to an alternator bearing going bad.

You said whirring. Should be a directory of sound adjectives so we could all know what we are talking about. Whirring on a turbo car would point me to the turbo.... Need more details.

Torque tube bearings...?

Does is whine with the clutch pedal pressed....?

Loose belts usually won't whine but overtightened ones will, especially the balance belt.

well, my friend said it sounded to him like the power steering pump. I know its not overtightened...cause its been almost a year since the belts have been done, and its been sitting a lot since then. No, doesn't whine with the clutch pedal pressed, cause when the pedal gets pressed it falls to the floor (i.e. my clutch problem)

I know the whine of the turbo...i just wish there was a better way to describe the sound. If i had a tape recorder i could get the sound for yuo, but I don't. So, I don't know...heh.

Get a long screwdriver and CAREFULLY place the business end to different parts of the engine, such as the water pump, and place your ear on the other end, this will help locate the sound.
