Smile Steering wheel lock

Is it possible to override the steering wheel lock without power in the car? I just replaced my reconditioned rack in the car, ..manual steering..and the lock on the column is engaged. I tried using the key thinking that would release it, but no-go. Since the car is almost all apart, I don't know if it would be wise to put a battery in it to release the lock. Any help would be helpful..Thanks in advance..Still looking for the magic release button...

purely mechanical. you might have the column shaft pushed up or pulled down to where the pin cannot disengage from the slot. try wiggling it from the intermediate shaft side.

you might need to wiggle the wheel to get the key to turn

Thanks guys..didn't really want to pull the steering column apart..I'll give it the "wiggle " treatment some more....and go from there.

Hey Tiger... the problem I had with my Boxster (the locking mechanism is very similar to the 944 I think) is that the pin that slides to lock the steering was stuck, not jammed but stuck from lack of lubrication or dirt in the grease. My experience is here...

... might give you some ideas.

Thanks Elgy..Good write up..My key was somewhat difficult to turn..so it may be just dirt etc ..I'll hit it with some penetrating oil and perhaps graphite and see if that helps prior to getting "down & dirty" with this . Great pics, BTW!

Talking steering wheel lock

Thanks guys,, with a bit of graphite puffed into the lock assembly I was able to get the wheel unstuck and the lock disengaged. Probably just cold grease and age I guess. Gave it a shot of PB blaster as well just to make sure. Thanks again...
