Default Transaxle removal

Today's the day!!! Finally going to get the transaxle changed in my 84. Uploading pics as I go along.

Ready for surgery

Started by removing coupler bolts which are 8mm hex. Used socket and extension and had no problems with the bolts. Then slid coupler back.

Disconnected the only electrical on this transaxle

Disconnected CV axles from transaxle side, tied them up out of the way.

Now I need to loosen 13 mm bolt to shifter linkage.

More pics to come.

Shifter removed

Found this little guy under the shifter foam. He might have been there since 84' lmao

Ready to drop

It's out!!

Replacement ready to go in

Got the replacement up mounted and all connected.

Worked into the night and didn't really get any pics of reinstall, way too greasy to be messing with my camera at that point. Did get a pic of replacement transaxle fully installed

Not sure, started making real bad noise months ago, but never failed completely, so may end up opening original transmission to see what happened

I give Porsche engineers credit on the design of this. Awesome design and so much easier to service and change out being in the rear. Have done a few transmission swaps , all either fwd or rwd with conventional mounted transmission. This by far the easiest. If anyone is apprehensive about doing this job themselves, don't be, all bolts are easily accessible and the only thing I recommend is a good transmission jack or motorcycle jack like I used. Now time to go drive

How did you do with the plastic tube? That thing is brutal!

If you are taking about the plastic tube the shift rod goes through from front of bell housing through back to shifter linkage LMAO!! I was ready to drop transaxle and that was the only thing I was unsure how to unhook. Every video and write up just said "slide tube back" giving no instruction which direction to slide and how to slide it. I was also getting confused because I saw a few videos where they said shift rod needed to be slid forward until it comes out of the plastic tube completely. This was NOT happening in my case, there was no way that the shift rod has enough room to slide forward and come completely out of the tube. Tired of being on my back trying to figure out how to remove the tube, I just lowered trans back first and pulled out. Did the reverse when installing and once I got bell housing bolts in, I reached in and slid tube back through. No issues.

The first time I removed & replaced my transmission, it came down nicely (as yours did) but trying to put it back in with the tube in place... let's just say I almost cut a hole in the spare tire well.

That tube is thick and hard as a rock! I am not sure how you are supposed to push either end's tab and slide it while installed; I could barely do it out-of-car (I basically jammed a screwdriver into the tab to bend it in and hammered it on the tube end).

It is the most ridiculous thing to get hung up on lol. I wonder if that tube really does anything useful....

The torque tube provides structural rigidity for the transmission and thus the entire drive train including the engine.

The plastic tube mentioned is just to keep dirt out. I never use my cars in the winter so I always remove that tube entirely. No issues with different transaxle cars for the last 20 years.

I also was looking for the "tab" to push. There's no pressing that tab lol! I honestly thought if the plastic tube breaks I was going to run without it. I did have to slightly "dent" the spare tire well also.
