Default Bare Block Weight Contest

I just put my bare 968 block on my bathroom scale. It is completely stripped -- no head, no piston, no rods, no crank, no girdle, no balance shafts or housings -- just the block (with studs).

I also weighed the 968 crank (stock). And the girdle.

Let's here your guestimates. The weights surprised me a little.

Riff, I trust you've done this before. I got the following on my $20 bathroom scale:

Block: 68 lbs.
Crank: 58 lbs.
Girdle: 8 lbs.

On my bathroom scale, yes. Keep in mind I have not had it calibrated since the day I brought it home from the BIG K 3 years ago.

Wow, I wouldn't have guessed the crank weighs almost as much as the block!

I've read that these cranks are heavy; I'm kind of suprised with them as heavy as they are that they needed to add the balance shafts, but I guess there's only so much that can be done with the crank alone to elimanate the inherent vibration in a 4-cyl.

Actually Tom I never weighed those parts before last night. Kind of have an unfair advantage. When you posted this, I went to the basement and weighed those pieces from the ruined block I told you about in the Rennlist chat lounge... Ended up destroying my bathroom scale when the crank fell over and smashed the dial! I should have waited for more people to enter before posting.....

Going to have to go out today and buy a new scale.

Cheers,

Mine are off in the Quest....so horribly inefficent....and Porsche licensed em from Mitsubishi (Starion/Conquest) but they suck in the quest and acutally do some good in the porsche...
