Default Hood badge removal

I'm looking to replace the hood crest on my car after the paint job. How do I remove the old crest on mine so I can paint it without it on there? On my 84 before I simply slid a putty knife under it to pry it up. Is there anything different about the fasteners ont he late model 944s? Would I have to take the nose panel off on this 86 to remove the crest???

Andy

You shouldn't have to. Mine was a bugger'd to get off, just took a little time and patients and it eventually came out. Although mine is an '89 but I believe to to be the same as the '86. I'm sure someone will chime in if it's not.

Someone removed mine once with a sharp screwdriver in a parking lot. Quick but the scratches left behind might sway me against doing it this way myself...

You should be able to remove the badge on your 86 just like you did on the 84. Two putty knives, one to lay flat over the paint to protect and the other to pry and you are done.

The only word of caution would be if you don't know all the history of the car. Replacenent badges usually come with a pair of quick nuts. You don't need them on a 944 but if a previous owner did screw them on then you need to get to the back of the panel to get them off.

in the event of having quick nuts on them, how would i go about removing the nose panel on an 86? I know they aren't welded on the later ones..

For all those badge thieves out there, no need for a screwdriver - a length of dental floss gets your ripped off prize out without damaging my paint job. Thank you!

I'm pretty sure you just pull the fastening bolts and lift up. I've never done it myself but recall others saying that were something like 6 bolts that held it on. So try prying it a bit to see how solid the badge is socked on before you go looking for the bolts that hold the panel on.

There are some plastic inserts in the sheet metal that grab onto the two studs of your badge so you may need to work the badge a bit to get those to let loose if they have been holding the same badge for almost 20 years.

At least you don't have to worry about spot welds like the 924's have.

No bolts. Just plastic grommets that the 2 prongs on the badge go into. It's that freaking simple.

the crest has been replaced before. It's just that there is an awkward dent and crack in one of red crest stripes. So I figure just replace the whole thing. Would it be easy to get those nuts with a ratchet or wrench?

Andy, have you read the responses? There are no bolts. The emblem is attached by pressure only. Two prongs on the back fit into 2 grommets on the nose panel.

Hey,it's simple, and please dont scratch the paint!
Just unscrew those 4 screws from the upper part of your nose panel ,lift this panel just enough to see the 2 prongs on back of your crest (in this moment you will see if you have fastening bolts or not-I say this because i put on my crest such of these)and push them in order to lift the crest, than from outside remove your crest.

I'd take it off before paint and put it on after paint, but that's just me.
