Hey Z-man, don't you have non-stock dampers in your S2?

v944god, sorry to hear about all of those problems. Sounds like just about every bad thing that can happen to a TII has.

But for the piston lovers out there, a Rotary Does not Have the following.

Camshaft(s)
Intake or Exhaust Valves,
Balance Shafts
Rollers
Lifters
Cylinder Head
Connecting Rods
Wrist Pins
Rod Bearings

What they do Have.

3 apex Seals Per Rotor
6 Side Seals Per Rotor
1 Main Rotor Bearing Per Rotor
1 Eccentric Shaft
1 Stationary Gear Per Rotor

Only Moving parts, 2 Rotors and 1 Eccentric Shaft.

My N/A Rotary lasted 280,000 miles before the first rebuild. I even drove it 1200 miles to Florida for the Rebuild on the bad motor. Truely the biggest problem is a lack of qualified mechanics to build or work on them. It now has over 300,000 miles on it and if it was driven daily would still be very reliable. The turbo's can be a different story. There are very few that go beyond 100k miles without a rebuild.

v944god, I thought you said that the motor was recently rebuilt? Does the seller have anything to say about your problems?

It was recently rebuilt, but the seller denied any problems, he said he never had the problems when he had the car. Also, I told the rotary specialist about the rebuild and he said no matter what type of condition it is in even if it has 0 miles, if it runs lean and detonates its over.

But, it runs on one rotor now and backfires if I try to take it past 3.5k rpms. The rotary guy said you can drive it with one rotor no problem but whats the point, its dieing.

So I was stuck in a tight spot. Either fix it, or sell it as-is. If I sold it as-is I'd lose around $2k on the sale. So I bite the bullet and fix the car and sell it after it's properly been broken in. I'm going to try to get $5500 firm for the car, even though I spent around $9k total on fixing it. Car is going to get a completely teardown to rebuild. Just got a rebuilt super street port engine with a bunch of internal mods (coolant jacket mods, 3mm apex seals, etc..). New clutch, alternator, flywheel, bigger turbo, injectors, EBC, etc..

Also I learned MBC's are crap! Don't waste your money on that ****. Thats the reason the boost spiked and crapped out my engine. My current MBC is crap and I'm going to switch to a nice EBC that can properly regulate the boost w/o worrying about crazy spikes.

But, I'm going to move on and get myself a 951 in a couple months. I'd rather deal with the headaches of a 951 than a RX-7. Even though a 951 is a hard car to work on most mechanics should know the basic structure of the car. The RX-7 is a totally different story.

You guys better be careful or Tom is going to come on here and go ape!

I've never been a fan of the RX-7. Gen's 1 and 2 were terribly ugly IMHO. In a lot of ways, kind of the like the bizarro-world 944 It's amazing for me to park next to a Gen II - and especially a Gen I RX and think that both cars were built in the same time period.

Of course, to each his own, I suppose. The Gen III was impressive b/c it was SO different. But then when you factor in the whole reliability thing... they aren't so attractive at all.

Don't hit me, Tom

Micah what are you talking about? The Gen1 production ended in 1985. By 1986 US markets had 2nd gen (which looks almost identical to your 944 so how you could like one and not the other is mind boggling), the 3rd gen was introduced in 1992 (ROW) and 1993 (US).

The single biggest problem with them is that they sell very cheap, attract 17 yr old kids who do ZERO maintenance and then complain when they dont last. By now even the newest 2nd gen is 13 years old and the oldest is close to 20. Things break. The NA motors go a long time, the Turbos are a different animal. People upgrade them but ignore the poor fuel system (it really is awful), they go lean and bang. They are so east to work on that most people dont care, few hundred bucks and a weekend and you can fix it.

Just like 944s they cost as much as you know how to fix yourself.

Matt,

Since the 944 didn't change outwardly from 1982, its design beat the "updated" design of the gen II 7's by a solid 3 years.

If you'll note, I commented "IMHO." So once again, IMHO, this:

has not aged nearly as well as this (from 1982).

As a matter of fact, the more I look at the first picture, the more I realize that the first gen Ford Probe looks quite a bit like the gen II RX as well

To each their own, Matt. I think that the considerably more aggressive flares of the 44s are what give us a more attractive shape - at least over the RX

You could be right except that at the time the 924 was still for sale (not that we need to post pics I have owned numerous RXs and 944s) and the 924 did not go away until 1988. The fender flares are what set the 944 apart, however if you want to know how close they really look, look for shots from above looking onto the hood area, you will be surprised how much they look like a 944.

To each his own, but trust me they are more alike than they are different.

but trust me they are more alike than they are different.

Other than having entirely different engine designs and one looking more dated than the other

Now, here's another question... which interior has fared better?

Anyway, I did really like the design of the final gen RXs - and I'm sure that we can both at least agree that it has aged pretty well.

I would take an RX interior over any early 944 interior any day and I think that is is really a toss up for the later cars. In the later cars some functions of the dash are FAR too far to be useful IMHO. I also prefer the RX sport seats to the 944 sports seats (which aside from looking good are incredibly uncomfortable).

I like the 3rd gen as well, they look great but they are a lot like the 951s it is almost impossible to find one that has not been modified and they are not even kind of reliable.

I have the Koni Yellow shock absorbers: it was a factory installed option (#474) that the previous owner ordered.

I guess you'd call that a grey area between 'stock' and 'mod'
