Default OT:Remember the kid who put sand through the intake? What about ceramic!?!?

Our Honda CBR600 motor bit the bullet on the dyno today. We tore the top end down, and got a nice look at the cylinder bores. Gouges you could easily feel with your finger. Ceramic casting material from the intake casting didn't all get washed out apparently, and was sucked through to the cylinders. Fun time. Pulled another motor from a car with a bad top end, swapped top ends and finally got it back on the dyno. Long night, time for bed because my back hurts.

It was interesting to tear apart a motorcycle engine though. The ring tension tolerances is really low in these high-revving engines; you can easily move the pistons back and forth a little. Plus we installed a 6 plate kevlar clutch. It should be fun getting experience on an engine that really doesn't matter to me, instead of screwing something up with a real car.

Though if me and some other underclassmen rebuild the motor and throw it back in the old car, we get free reign on it!

Sucks that it broke... but that sounds like a good time to be. Little 4's are cool to work on. Interesting on the ring tolerance.. I have never looked it up on my FZR. You'd think they'd be pretty tight, especially when they rev to 14,000 rpm.

Tell us a little more about the project.

The car or just the engine rebuild?

You can see more about our whole car in the link in my profile. My avatar is a Pro/E drawing of the car. It's a Forumla-style car, part of SAE's collegiate design competition. The goal is to design and produce a car for a weekend auto-crosser for about $25,000. Most teams use some 4 cylinder motorcycle engine. Engine size is limited to 600cc's, and there's a 20mm restrictor on the intake. HP for the best cars are mid-80's. With the good cars also weighing under 500lbs, this makes for very fast 0-60 times, sub 4 seconds.

We're not 100% sure what's going on with the engines right now. We just briefly talked about if some underclassmen would be willing to get the "chief", and older car, back up to par in exchange for free use of the car whenever we want. They take these cars up to the local auto-x's, so that would be really fun to do. Plus it'd be something to do, instead of just sitting in my room.

I read a good amount of the site last night. Seems like an awsome project.

Do you have to build everything, or do you have a pre-built chassis to work with?

Everything from scratch, except the motor, differential, and a few other critical things like that.

Ok, but what about?

The sand story was some kid on some ricer message board. He wanted to port and polish his car, so enough people convinced him to just pour sand into the intake to "Sandblast" it.

ive heard that porsche had some casting problems with the water cooled heads on the early gt3 race cars. there were pockets of sand that didnt get washed out of the cooling passages and would take out the water pumps...oops.

take care,
brian
