Wimps! This is what we call snow (this is the ONLY time school has closed here all year).

BTW, this picture is ~1mile north of my house on Rt. 481 (Major highway in this area, only road they were really even trying to clear).

Just before Christmas we already accumulated 4 feet of snow. Don't even ask about the rest and it ain't over yet! Our lawn still buried under some 22" inches of that stuff. My dog is the only one who thinks there's no such thing as too much snow

I'm still cracking up from the mess of traffic in ATL this morning. There was 1/4" of slush on the grass when people got up... you'd think there was a blizzard. 1/2 of our 450 space parking garage is empty, lots across the street are vacant, and most of midtown is quiet. UNREAL!!

Heavy snow advisory for FOUR inches?!?!? School closed for that much? We had to get at least 8", and it better have come down mostly between 3 and 6 am, or you were going to school. I just hope no one down south ever vacations in the north during the winter. That could be a traffic disastor.

Public grade schools & high schools will close when they feel it is unsafe to drive the busses on the roads. Where it crosses the line to 'unsafe' really depends on the area though. As you can see in Georgia where they don't see snow very often, they cancel it at the first hint of snowfall. In other areas (like around here), they only cancel it when the area is placed under a state of emergency (The government closes all roads to all non-emergency traffic, for one to make it easier to clear the roads, and for two, to limit the amount of emergency traffic needed). They do sometimes cancel it due to extreme cold temperatures when they aren't able to get the school busses started in the mornings (which never happens in our school district as they all have engine block heaters). A lot of other districts just impose 1hr or 2hr delays in the mornings due to the cold.

Colleges however only ever close when there is a state of emergency declared (essentially when it is illegal to drive). I think the only time I ever had class canceled due to weather was when the power (and therefore heat) was knocked out to about half the campus for a couple days a couple years ago.

Ahhhhhhh - Scootin159......I don't mean to be a **** disturber, but unless you live next to a Highway very close to Newfoundland, those pics are not of the New York area - now I know NY gets a lot of snow (I live in Nova Scotia), but it's nowhere near anything like those pics - Newfoundland is an extreme. Those pics are of the Transcanada Highway in Newfoundland. Nice try though (lol).

Now, if you want to see real snowfall, I just so happened to be right smack dab in the middle of the 100 cm (that's around FIVE FEET American folks) storm that fell on Nova Scotia (causing a driving curfew of 10:00 and the Government to declare a state of emergency) just this weekend.

Here are some good pics.....

IT'S STARTING!!!
