Interesting. Sure looks like a solid piece.
So HFB has a 951 trans with a 968 x-member and tank in an early 944...

Didn’t realize the tank was so big , my car didn’t have a OEM fuel tank , it was all removed in favor of a fuel cell which is expired by a few years already !

Cheers

At first I cut the crossmember through the middle. Then I drilled out the welding spots on the crossmember/side carrier. Now the crossmember fell literally off.
That was the easy part.
I opened the old crossmember to look how the bolts for the transmission mount were attached.
Here is a photo.

Then I cut a slot in the side carrier to see what’s inside and found out, there are two layers of sheet metal and the upper layer has indeed two holes for bolts. So I simply drilled through the first layer. Now you have the correct position where you have to fit your thread insert for the new crossmember and the tank straps. I fitted a similar thread insert as you can see in the photo above, then I welded up the slot again.

What i want to know is , do you have to cut off the early crossmember completely to fit the tank or does it fit into place ?
I have no problems cutting, fabricating and welding parts ... like they say, measure twice , cut once !

Cheers

Nope, as pointed out by V2 - I live in the Atlanta area.

Yes, you have to remove the crossmember AND the old fuel pump bracket completely.

Well, at least you are warmer that “Minnesota Jay”. You’ll have to visit his farm sometime- here is a picture of his barn! Dusty but filled with toys.

WOW! All this is good to know! thanks guys for posting all the pics and write-up! Maybe in the future...but not right now..What are the differences between the 951 transmission and the 016 trans found in the early cars? any length changes? I know that the mounts are different, but can be adapted over using the early mounts on the later trans..I guess that you did that too? HMM..
