Default What is this bulb/fixture for? Where does it go? (defrost light)

found this small bulb and fixture hanging loose behind the dash, 1991 944s2 Cab, in the area near the clock, hazard light and cigarette lighter. Where does it go? What is it for? It is not for the cigarette lighter (that fixture is accounted for).

Try the top of the vent, behind the windscreen defrost decal, you can just make out the clip in the photo

Thanks. Appears you are correct. I never noticed the tiny lens behind the instrument surround bezel. My next problem is that the harness appears to be wrapped around something deep underneath the dash and won't reach all the way up to the clip/fixture that holds the light. Always something...
I will think about extending the wires.

Good guess, but I think that light is too big- the one that snakes up into the "defrost divert" slide seems to have a longer cable as well. I suppose it is possible, but I recall the light was much smaller- could this be the light for the hazard switch? Or some other dash accessory?

+1 hazard switch, it's right there.

Update

aussie944cab is correct. Although I could not find this on any diagrams or write-ups, I spent some quality time under the dash last evening and eventually found that with correct routing, the wiring is indeed long enough (just barely) to reach up to the clip located at the top of the vent. The bezel that includes the gage surround and AC vent has a tiny lens behind the defrost symbol and this light clips into the bracket that is visible at the top of the picture I posted above.

Glad to be of help, Has your dash been re-covered, if so this might explain the tight wiring

Good eyes! Now that you mention it it odes look like a re-cover. So many 944's, so few with intact dashes!

Default Late to the game, but I'm pretty sure that is the cigarette lighter bulb

I had this same question today (86 951) - after reviewing Clarks garage I can say for sure that this bulb on my car is supposed to go to the clip attached to the clock next to the lighter socket.
I had replaced my lighter with a USB outlet/ voltmeter last winter and I think I must have broken the clip in the process.
I think the OP said he had that light accounted for, so maybe the S2 is different.

Both the vents as indicated above and the cigarette lighter have a T5 bulb each.

Swansons 944 having a dash restoration makes sense as they obviously routed the wire for the vent light wrong. It is actually very long and sits comfortably in that slot. The cigarette lighter bulb wire and socket is part of a small loom for other things behind that dash trim and is nowhere long enough to reach the vent bulb holder.

Ok that makes sense. In mine I think it could stretch to the upper vent but I turned the lights on and the defroster lit up so that one was definitely in there already.

I popped the bulb out and let it hang since the USB power outlet had it's own light.

Now hoping I don't need to run that electric tire pump.

Just got notice that this old thread is still active . First, thank you to everyone who responded. As a couple of you noted, the dashboard was recovered and re-installed by a shade-tree mechanic (me). I had not routed the wire improperly and when correctly routed does reach and illuminate the defroster lens.
