Default Jerking back and forth in gear?

I just recently purchased a 944 and had to replace the starter also did some basic things like change the oil and stuff, but when i test drove the car id put it in gear and whenever im not accelerating the car jerks back and forth. Has anyone heard of this before? I have a standard transmission just hoping its not any major transmission damage.

Could be the original rubber center clutch disk. Does it "clunk" when you change from accelerate to decelerate? You can check this by crawling underneath and pulling the transaxle inspection window plug (in the bell housing in front of the transmission). With the car in gear try to turn the drive shaft with your hand, if the clutch is good there should be limited movement... I got at least 20 or 30 degrees of slack.

If it is the clutch the repair is a challenge but doable for a competent DIYer. My experience is detailed here.

Another thing you can check for is rubber from the clutch in the starter hole. I found a bunch of chunks that weren't there before my clutch failed a few weeks ago. I had the same jerking in grear and clunking issues. Bad clutch was totally confirmed once the bellhousing was off. I was also concerned about transmission damage before I had to drop the trans and was able to take a look at the ring and pinion gears. No apparent damage. Best of luck!

You may be able to forego the trans drop by pulling the large plate on the side of the trans, after removing the c-v shaft and the driveshaft flange on that side of the trans. Be sure to clean the magnets while you're in there. Very easy to do.
