Question Halon fire extinguisher

I'm looking to buy a 2.5 pound halon fire extinguisher. I've got the mounting bracket from stable energies, and I'm trying to find the best price. So far it looks like the best price is from pelican at $109.85, anyone know where I can get a better price? Or better yet anyone have one they want to sell?

I bought a 5lb bottle from a local fireman for under $90... call the local fire department, they'll point you somewhere local and probably somewhere cheaper.

Why not get one from Stable Energies? IIRC, my Tri-gas was $75. You don't need 100% Halon, it's bad for the air too.

Brian, I actually talked to a bud who's a fireman and comes from a family of them, and he didn't really know where to get it cheap. He said that they are more expensive because they are not a chemical that's used often, or something to that sense.

Perry, what is the Tri gas stuff like, is it as easy to clean up as halon, and won't damage anything? I can't find that extinguisher on their website, did you have to call them to get it?

You can still get Halon extinguishers. I got mine from OG Racing along with the Brey-Krause mount. More expensive than the Pelican price though.

I am a firefighter, and I have used both 100% Halon and Tri Gas (Halotron) on hydrocarbon fires. For an automotive fire, Tri Gas (Halon, Argon, CO2) is perfect. It leaves no residue to clean up and works just about as good as 100% Halon.

Read up and see if Amerex has a 2.5 that you like.

Please do not purchase 100% Halon extinguishers... it's a waste of money, resources, and bad for the environment. Use the other options that work just as good.

It is also almost impossible to find them. Halotron works every bit as well and costs less, is easy to find, easier to clean up (trust me this is important if you have to use it), and better for the environment.

Perry - thanks for the link.

Well, you guys have cinvinced me to go with halotron instead of halon, now back to finding the best price.

While we're on the topic, how do AFFF extinguishers compare in effectiveness and cleanup?

They make a mess and don't work that great on plastics.

re: Amerex - That 5lb FAA approved Halotron unit looks pretty spiffy - any ideas on a price?

Halotron does work well and does not make a mess as stated above and I have had a chance to do a real life test.

It now stays in the car with me at all times.

Hm, I was told by the company (I dont remember the name but a large outfit) who sold me my Halon that Halotron works just as well except that you need almost twice as much volume to extinguish the same amount of fire. Not sure how accurate that is but the company sold both Halon and Halotron. IIRC, I spent about $80.

I used to be satisfied with my 5lb dry chem in the "ratty" old '44 - figured, what's the worst that could happen after *another* fire? Well, since seeing two wiring harness in track cars destroyed because standard dry chem was used (it was either that, or let it burn baby burn) I have a new outlook... something about $30 of prevention vs $130 of prevention - not real hard when you consider collateral fire damage could easily exceed $1000 in just electrical problems. Will be installing Halotron 3-nozzle in the race car this year, but am looking for a right-now portable solution for the other cars.
