Pearldrum944,

I've had plenty of problems w/my cars, but preventive maintenance has always kept me from being stranded.

I wish the PO of my car had done that. I mean, I understand that stuff went bad after it sat or 7 years. But some things, like the T belt almost having a 6 inch bald spot?

I've owned my '89 Turbo since new and have NEVER been stranded. That's 15 years! I came close on one occasion, though, when the clutch developed problems (the infamous broken springs) but I was still able to limp home.

Haha, great stories. Sounds like none of these things are very bad for cars as old as this. I dont have a 944 yet but I'm searching for a Turbo right now, I have a good $9,000 able to spend on it right now.

It feels as though the shifter is jammed and you can't shift into gear. In my case it was intermittent when it first appeared, so I was eventually able to get the car moving.

Good to know...if that happened I probably would be looking for tranny problems.

Got stranded for the first time last saturday...

I was coming home from Castro Valley in the wee hours of saturday morning when I heard a very (very) slight pop and then no more going. Thought it slipped out of gear (which worried me enough) but it wouldn't drive in any gear. Moderately long story short, I got towed home and the clutch was the culprit. Hooray for not needing to replace my transmission (sorry tifo :-P). Ironically, I was planning on putting the car up in the air on the very same saturday to fix said clutch. I had the new kit in the car with me, and my spare flywheel was in the process of getting machined. Ahhhh irony.

So, funny experience, except that was I was 9 miles outside my free tow radius, but the driver wrote it up as 8 and popped the lock on my friend's vette for free. (OT, but those cars are _not_ designed to be easy to get into.)

My 83na broke down 500miles after changing the belts at a porsche garage and 600miles from home.

The spline holding the cam shaft was missing.?? Result ? crushed some of the valves and rods ..etc etc.
Actual the engine didn`t die, And I drove it up on the rescue truck myself!! but I gotta say, it sounded like a old Merscedes diesel praying its last prayers...
Anyway I pretty much ended up changing most of the engine spending 1200$ , And the guys at the garage even put on a ported head from a racing 944 at no extra charge...

The power steering pulley sawed through the lower radiator hose on my 1988 S. Left me stranded a few miles from home.

Well, since this forum includes 968's, I'll mention that the PLASTIC(!!) impeller on the water pump decided not to turn anymore. This, after I thought the overheating was due to the thermostat. After spending time and effort to change the thermostat, the impeller eventually gave way! My mechanic replaced with a pump that uses a metal impeller.
