Lightbulb FLuids Fluids Fluids!!!

Hi everyone...I just bought a 1984 5-speed 944 (my first porsche...first sports car for that matter) and I wanted to know what brand fluids (oil, tranny, etc.) everyone uses. Let me know what works best...

Thanks

Welcome!

Lot's of people use the following oils/ lubes:

Amsoil
Redline
Mobil 1

If the engine's seals a questionable, you may not want to switch to a synthetic oil as they flow more easily and any small leaks, or soon-to-be leaks will spring a, well, leak! I run regular old dino oil, Castrol 20W-50 in the summer.

Brake/clutch fluids a lot of people run ATE "super blue" or "super gold."

For coolant, make sure it PHOSPHATE FREE. Regular coolant can damage all-aluminum engines like the 944's. I don't remember off hand, but I know there's some VW coolant that's good.

Also, before everyone else says it, CHANGE THE TIMING BELT if it hasn't been done (and documented) recently. If that breaks, pistons meet valves and you have a lighter walet.

Good luck!

Oil: Mobil 1 10w30/15w50 depending on your climate (Mahle Filter)
Water: Any Al safe antifreeze (50/50 mix with water)
Tranny: 70w90NS Redline
Brakes: DOT3 or better NON-SILICONE brake fluid. ATE super blue is a favorite.

it depends where you are as to the weight of the motor oil

i currently have:

Castrol GTX 20W 50 motor oil (just changed)
ATE super blue racing brake fluid (just changed)
SWEPCO 203 gear oil (a couple years ago, greatly improved cold shifting)
Prestone antifreeze about 70/30 mix (a year or so ago, new heater valve)

next on the list for antifreeze is that orange stuff everyone likes.

ymmv, everyone uses some different stuff. mobil 1 is good for these cars, but only if you are VERY confident in the seals. people like redline oils in the transmission.

good luck, and welcome to the finest collection of porsche enthusiasts ever anywhere!

Is the redline MT-90 good for NJ weather. Transmissions have always confused me, so my questions are:

Is gear oil and manual transmission fluid the same?
We only use 1 type of fluid in the transmission?
We use GL-5 in our 944 trannys?

What type of redline Manula transmission fluid would you reccomend me to put in the 944 N/A gearbox.

The works manual states GL-4, SAE 70 Hypoid gear oil, about 2 liters.
watch out for friction improvers if you have a factory LSD (option 220) fitted.
You might want to check the archives (search), there is a lot on this subject.
