Seems they switched in 86.

A slick trick is to take a set of early NA strut housings and relocate the 2 brackets that aren't the same so they fit the 87 951. You can run some very nice Bilsteins that way, and its a pretty cost effective trick that works well for dual duty (street/track) cars.

I know the konis are different starting in 97. Was wondering though is the stock strut assemblies were interchangable and if not what is the difference?

Dave, not sure about the 85.5 944NA... Measure the thickness of your spindle where the struts clamps. If it's 18mm you can use the 951 struts. If it's 20mm, it's like the early 944NAs and you can't use the 951 strut.
However, it does work the other way around like Scott said. You can put rebuildable struts from the early NA onto a 951 (with 1mm shims) and use Bilstein strut inserts, or inexpensive KYBs for that matter. Wouldn't recommend that for track use though...

I put a set of the Koni adjustables off of a 951 on my 86na. I had to mill the pocket larger (to 20mm) and slot the lower hole to match the one on the na spindle. Only took about an hour to modify and they have worked great ever since.
