4v cam removal

Default 4v cam removal

so im pulling a 4v motor apart and would like to know if there is a clever way to pull the cams and tensioner assembly in a unit....the variocam unit looks like it should have a "do not open, no user serviceable parts inside" warning on it...


at any rate...before i pull the cheeseheads are there any non-nos...is hould be warey of?

ps...any body need a bunch of low mile 968 parts?

Don't know about the 4 cylinder motors - but on the 928 4V motors, there is a special tool listed in the FSM's to hold the cams in place until all of the bearing caps are removed, then you remove the tool which let's you remove the Cams.

I've removed my Cams without using the tool mentioned - slowly loosening the bearing caps in a criss-cross fashion about 1 turn of the bolt each pass not getting in a rush worked for me. I also used this method when re-installing my Cams.

Be careful if you use this method - I also know of 1 928 owner who used this method that ended up breaking one of his intake cams.

Can't help you on the cam removal but I am curious about what you want to get rid of. Engine only or rest of car too?
