Default 951 exhaust mid-section/muffler

I have a rattle coming from the mid/muffler section of my 951 exhaust (I think from inside the muffler itself), and before I get into trying to address this without spending c. £2,000 on a replacement...

Is there any realistic chance that it might be fixable? If something's broken loose inside, maybe the right light engineering/welding chap could do some emergency surgery. Obviously it would hardly be a guaranteed-for-10-years kinda fix, but if it's cheap and it works…

Pic attached of the section in question. (Not mine; thank you, internet!)

Just cut the silencer out, and replace with stainless tube.

Thanks blade - after a bit more thought i wondered about that myself… are there any issues around changing the gas flow through the exhaust? Not something I understand, but I have vaguely picked
up the idea that easier flow through the exhaust isn’t necessarily a good thing. That said, I just saw that at least one company offers an off the shelf ‘performance’ straight-through alternative for this section, so I guess it must be ok.

In the US that section is the catalytic converter, not a muffler. Do not know the rules where you are but if you have to meet emissions cutting it out might not be a good idea. Generally cats rattle when the grid inside is falling apart, time to replace.

I'm pretty sure I'm OK on that front – I think that the UK emissions testing (part of the annual MOT) doesn't require a cat for pre-1993 vehicles, and my '87 turbo was never fitted with one. But I will double-check that.
