Default Machining a Head to gain horsepower

I have a 1985 924 engine in my race car. Is it advisable to machine the head to gain additional compression and horsepower or should I swap the engine for a 1988 924s engine that already has better / increased compression?

What are the rules for the series you're running?
944spec allows shaving the head to match the CR of the 88 pistons and an offset key to get cam timing back to original.
SCCA Improved Touring allows 0.025" below the service limit, or a bump of 0.5 compression ratio. So it makes sense to find a 88 engine.
