Default Bad CV Joint?

I've just developed a noise coming from the left rear I think, really hard to tell, but kinda of a clicking to knocking sound that increases with speed. But, it's intermittent, it will do it for a short time and then go away. Is there another method to determine if the CV joints are bad? I can't think what else it could be.

It's the CV's.... changed all 4 of mine last week. Mine were intermitent also, seemed to be worse when it was cold. Took the car out today and could tell a big difference with the new ones.

My noise started the other day and has been constant. Thumping speeds up as speed increases. It is not intermittent. Has been constant since I noticed it. How can I tell if they are bad?

Jeeper, I've responded in your other thread, but again, a constant humming sound is usually wheel bearing related. CV's ping and clunk sporadically when they fail.

CV's.....not much else that does that. Mine would be quiet in a straight line until they warmed just a bit and then I turned, then would start.

A short term and quick solution is to inject grease in with a grease needle through the boots. Beyond that you can take the axles off and clean and repack them (if the CVs are in good condition) and reuse. Some people say take them and swap directions and sides and have good luck getting some more time out of them. I'd figure you'd still want to put more grease in there no matter what as if they are dried out, it won't take long even if you turn them around for them to start making noise going the other way....

Just did my whole axles this past weekend and now nice and quiet

Try swapping them over for a bit. Then they rotate in the opposite direction. Good for another 17 years. Or till you get a bigger turbo.

Grab the axle shaft and see if there's a lot of play side-to-side. Fresh CV's won't allow you to move the shaft much. Worn ones will allow you to bang the shaft back and forth pretty easily.

When I pulled mine apart last year, my intention was to just repack them. After seeing how worn the bearing races were, it was an easy decision to replace them.
