Post no shake no shimmy

Just thought Id share this little tid bit. I had the dreaded shake @ 70 mph... so I went in to my local tire shop to get the fronts balanced. They are not out of balance according to mister tire man. All else checks out. OK. Still have the wobble. Some time passes. I take it in to a different tire shop. Yes the fronts are balanced but... the right side is out of round. Out of round you say? Yes out of round. Apparently as the tire starts to separate (busted cord internally) they get out of round. Who knew? (not the first tire guy). I have Dunlop SP5000s on with about 50% wear left. For the short term I had them stick the suspect on the rear. Guess I will be needing at least a pair of replacements. Will keep you posted.

are the tires gaurunteed? seems to me you should be able to get them replaced for minimal cost if they are only 50 percent worn

I just ran across this same issue with a local "newbie". He has a 951 that is in excellent shape with only 58K on the odometer. Aside from the usual maintenance items he had this "shimmy" that started at about 50 MPH or so.

I did some preliminary checking, and although a couple of bushings needed replacement, the front end was nice and tight.

On a hunch I recommended new tires. A couple of days later I got an e-mail from him stating that new tires fixed the problem. He also told me the tire shop determined the tire compound on the left front had taken a set and had developed a flat spot.

Now you will only beat up the rear bearings and not the front bearings, bushings, ball joint, tie rod ends and steering link.

So true SoCal. This was an exersize in idetifying the problem without throwing money at it. Next is to source some replacements, be they used or new. My preferable solution would be to upgrade to 16s with new rubber all round and use the current 15 in. Fuchs for snows. Cha Ching.
