Default Ignition coil

Anyone use a "Flamethrower" ignition coil? I used one on another 924S 15+ years ago but I don't remember which one I had used.

Why? Did you also increase spark plug gap? Stock coils are robust and make a fine spark.

yeah, "upgraded ignition systems" are high-grade snake oil that don't do anything but lighten your wallet, if you're going to keep the same plug gap.

They're cheaper to purshase.

Not cheaper than a used stocker or rando coil from a Jetta. Assuming your stock coil is bad (this is unlikely).
(edit, or used off Volvo, Saab, BMW, etc.)

Is your coil hot to the touch while the engine is recently shut off? A bad one will be so hot that you can't touch it..

It works just fine, tests within specs and is not hot (warm) unless it's 110° outside. I'm going through every system and updating with 21st century made parts when possible. I plan on doing a road trip. Thanks to everyone for the insight into coils.

It's well worth reading this before making any changes from the factory coil:

944/951 Ignition System Testing

That explains the issues with using different coils without an appropriate DME software update to account for the different charging time.

I'd add my own. 02 in telling you OEM electronic stuff is most always more reliable than the aftermarket, no matter how fancy it may look, or the bold claims the manufacturers make. A rep from Wells-Ampco once told us that the vast majority of aftermarket ignition coils sold were to customers replacing perfectly good OE coils, which were improperly diagnosed.
