And an 016 part number too! I work on Audi’s for a living and even the repair manuals are set up the same way. Maybe that’s why it has taken me so long to get my 944 back on the road. My project looks a little too much like my work.

Here's where the 944 came from:

And to change your car from a Porsche to a volksvagen****zenboxen when it's part way there already is a bit weird. Keep the Porsche badge. These cars aren't respected enough already.

The AOR transmission in my '89 S2 is Audi, and the truth is it takes VW tools to service. When I went looking for a transmission shop to work on it, I went to the best Audi mechanic I could find in my area. Some things I sub out and I didn't really want to spend over $4000 on specialty tools for the job. It made much more sense to find someone who did it for a living.

When I shop for a spine surgeon, I don't start by interviewing podiatrists. It's just this thing I have...

The 924 Carrera GTR was a brilliant car. I had the fortune to stumble on a 1980 931 that had fallen into the hands of a clueless person who sold it to me for $4000 cash. At the time there were just shy of 14,000 931s in circulation worldwide, the fellow I was negotiating with had no idea there was a difference between a 924 and a 931. My opinion is he got the car in trade for a gambling debt.

I only had the car for less than a year before it got totaled and almost killed me, but I'll never forget it. It had the misfortune of being painted in a noxious metallic root beer brown, but it was a great car. Now it's probably been reduced to pot metal ashtrays. It will be missed. Had life gone a different direction, I'd have built it to the Carrera GTR spec and I might even have had the tub acid dipped and painted white. Worse things could have happened.

It's a European tradition to marry first cousins (witness the Hapsburgs). The American south didn't invent the idea, but it may be why we discovered hemophilia.

This will likely go down in the annals of the "best thread of the month". You got us all talking, that's always good.
