For anyone who has put off changing their old motor mounts for new ones (like I did for years), you will be amazed at the transformation that occurs to your car when the new mounts are installed.
The car seems to run so much smoother, the slight vibration when taking off from a stop is gone, and it feels like a whole new car! I should have done this a long time ago.
Some of the installation descriptions sound like you'll be doing a lot of swearing when it comes time to swap the mounts in, but it was one of the easier repairs I've done. I also replaced the steering rack at the same time, so that may have helped.
When it came time to unbolt the front cross-member, I unbolted one side at a time, and left the other side loosely unbolted, and then pried down on the free side to get the new mount installed. That way I didn't have to struggle to get the crossmember bolted back in place if I had removed it completely (it's heavy!). I couldn't get the new mounts installed by leaving the crossmember bolted loosely on both sides.

I have the original mounts in my S2. Do you notice less vibration in the shifter with your new mounts? I'm getting a vibration, but at all RPM's (not just at idle). Would hate to pay to have the mounts changed if I have a deeper problem, etc.
That said, I bet changing to new mounts would smooth out the engine feel enough to warrent the expense.

Yes, I do feel less vibration in the shifter, at idle and when on the road. It wasn't terribly bad before, but maybe that's because I had become accustomed to it. The car is far more fun to shift and drive than it was before.
Also, it seems to be much easier getting into reverse, although maybe the shop that did the alignment lubricated something in the driveline. I know they lubed the driver's side door and now it closes very easily, whereas before you felt the weight of the door when closing it.
It's funny how over time, you unconsciously get used to things that are broken or not working like they should.

I know when I go from my 944, to another car (Taurus, Honda, etc), the other car feels way more civilized! I had the mounts changed on the NA I sold, and I remember it felt like the engine wasn't on when I started it up for the first time!
All I need is an extra $500 !

I have changed motormounts on my S2.
Not a huge different, but it was worth the money.

I did the mistake of changing the mounts to aftermarket mounts...now I already have to do them again (2yrs and 25k miles later). If/when you change them I recommend paying extra for the factory mounts...

Would ONLY do the Porsche updated Turbo mounts...heard about those after-market (including Vertex's "OEM") mount problems.
Night and day...THAT's what I want!
How hard is it to do yourself?? Or is it only for those with the proper tools, jackstands, etc?

Cheaper one's aren't cheaper when you have to replace them in a year or two! Get the real ones! $500 or so installed by a mechanic.
Now if I can only convince my wife that a smoother engine is a need rather than a want!

There were no special tools required that I can recall. I followed the procedure in Clark's Garage.
Tell your wife that parts will start falling off the engine unless you fix it.
