Mine is an 87 but I could screw it on without taking it off but it was a real pain. I took the handle off one time since it was much easier. Turns out the threads on the rod were worn pretty bad and I had to get a new to me handle. Nice and solid now.

I found removing the rubber washer that goes between the top of the spring and the button helps when trying to find the thread and screw that stupid thing back on! Try it.
The button is plastic, and shouldn't wear the threads at all, so it's a matter of getting the threads to catch. Good luck.

I made the mistake of buying another handle used...
The thread is deep inside the button (not on the exposed part). If you dont put the spring in, I bet your old button would easily screw onto the new lever. It happened to me!
It's all about being able to line up the spring/lever screw thread/washer/button, so the lever doesn't receed back into the handle. Know what I mean?

I'm also having hand brake problems - the ratchet just does not hardly ever click into place, but it does sometime, so i guess it is worn/misadjusted rather than missing a part - is the part i need the actual handle, or the base part of the lever, or the spring, or what? And where would i get these parts from? Its a '84 944.

The plastic strips out easily, I'm on my 3rd in 1.5 years of owning the car. I am working on a satisfactory replacement that will be more durable, won't strip, and will be more aesthetically appealing. PM me if you would be interested and I'll go into details...

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the feed back. I talked to my mechanic and he said that the threads went to the end. Turns out he was wrong because I decided to try screwing it on again and there it went. All is well now.
. Thanks especially to Andy K because you where dead on.

Mine won't pull up, i'm scared to put any muscle into it, (don't want it to get stuck). While the topic is being mentioned.. Does anyone know where the parking brake drum is? or is it inside the transmission? I know on the range rover its a drum on the back of teh transmission that ive worked on by taking apart, and banging teh drum to separate it to get it to work. Anyone have any help for me?
