Default 85.5 944 S?

944 turbo is the one that got away from me in Highschool (my dad, rightfully so, decided it was too fast for a first car [guy was only asking about $3k for it back then too]). Anyways, I've been looking at 944's in general lately, so including the NAs, and came across what's listed as an 85.5 944. I get that part; also, the listing mentions nothing of "S" designator, but the badge is there in the pics. I thought that wasn't available until '87, am I wrong? Nothing else I'm capable of identifying from the pics; speedo shows 160 if that helps any.

does the tachometer go to 6400, or 6800?
6800 would indicate an S.

The S model was only available in 87 and 88. You can tell the difference by the engine pics, if any, as the two engines look quite different. But I am betting someone put the 'S' badge on it without doing the engine swap as that is much more common.

Other identifiers differentiating an 85.5 from an S is the '16 ventiler' badges on either fender (an extension of the door guards but located on the front fenders...an NA is plain) and the S would have late offset wheels vs the 85.5 having early offset.

I agree with the "just sticking" the badge on; simplest explanation. But (I haven't spoken to the owner) figured there was a chance they had the year wrong, and was looking for the identifiers you've all been kind enough to provide. Can't see the tach sadly; I may reach out for more info. In case anyone thinks there's enough to go on from the pics, here's the link: 85.5 S?

Thanks all!

That's an 85.5 or 86 NA, not an S. It has an 8V NA engine and fuchs wheels which are early offset (up to 86). Also, if you look closely you can see the 6400 tach like Spencer noted. Overall, a pretty nice car at that price.

Man I had to go back through the pics a few more times before I realized where you caught the tach at, nice spot! I thought it's fairly priced; I dig the darker interior, haven't seen that too often in my searches so far. But so far, whenever I encounter an ad with just a single form of contact (in this case only email), it ends up being a scam.

Thanks for helping me find my answer all!

if you look at the car look closely at the front. I don't think the headlights line up.
