Using the rear seat as a child seat
A standard child car seat is a really tight fit back there. It seems like my 2 year old son fits much better just sitting on the back seat the way it is..
However, if I do that, I would need to fabricate something to strap him down because the standard rear seat belts is not sufficient. Question is..is it even legal to put a 2 year old back there with no saftey approved car seat? Will I get a big fine if I get pulled over and the cop sees my toddler w/o a car seat?

This regulation varies from state to state. Here in New York, it appears, we must restrain our kids in some sort of dedicated child seat until age of 3. By age of 4 we can place them in the back restrained by seat belts. But I'd improvise the shoulder belt. I remember seeing a picture of a kid strapped down by lap and shoulder inside a 944 rear passenger seat.

California is now 6 years or 60lbs before kids can ride without a car seat. I think that law started in 2002 and I had to keep my daughter in the car seat longer because of it. If you get caught you can get a ticket!
