Question spun bearing, crank ok?

Anyone ever spun a rod bearing but not have any damage to the crank or rod?

If you stopped as soon as you heard the "knocking" is there a chance you saved the crank?

What's the best way to check the crank? New std bearings with plastiguage? Would the plastiguage go between the bearings and crank or bearings and rod?

Or use a caliper or micrometer on the crank? I'm not sure you could check the rods other than visual inspection this way.

Take it to a good machine shop and have them check it out and micropolish it. You're gonna have to take it out anyway. Don't take the chance.

Take the rods out to them too and have them checked for size and straightness. When I spun a bearing the rod bent a very slight bit. They straightened it and stress relieved it (shot peened). It's fine now.

I have seen spun bearings result in ok cranks or cranks that needed minor work. Some have seized and blown up motors.

Follow Dal's advice.

I take it you stopped right away, congratulations on not trying to drive it home!

I'm with the others, you need expert advice. It might be worth it to get a good Porsche shop to look at the crank before you pull it.

I bought the car with a supposedly "spun" bearing. If the seller's story is true, it was driven home about a mile after total loss of oil pressure. It supposedly drove home fine but the next day the engine made lots of noise and hasn'y been driven since.

I bought the car and put some oil in and the lifter noise disappeared in about 5-10 seconds. But a deep knock remained. The knock is only heard above 1000rpm.

I'll be dropping the oil pan next month after the 914 shell is hauled off.

Any pictures of damaged cranks or spun bearings so I have some comparrisons?

It would be stupid not to bring it to a machine shop. I've never seen a crank after spinning a bearing that didn't need work .. but that's just me - I could probably tell you different if I were a machinist though

well, all bets are off until I actually crack open the pan and take a look. I'm just curious what has been the results of those who actually had a spun bearing.

"Drove it a mile"??? It's toast. It'll need , no make that NEED machine shop work.

Make sure you take the rods to them too, they'll need work too.

I wouldn't say all bets are off, I bet that it'll need work.

Don't worry, you will be able to tell. It will be the second one from the front, and both the crank and the rod will be rough to the touch and scored. Look for copper in the pickup.
