Default OT:Conquest Head Problem

Hey Guys,

You people are thebest when it comes to cars so I got a question.

I just bought a used head for my Conquest that had a bent valve but was promised not to have any cracks ,etc.. I have my old head I can throw some valves on till I get a better head (~6 months) but I was wondering if I could just drop the 2 old nonbent valves in my new head with 2 benet valves. Would I have to dissassemble the whole head?

Here are pics:

thanks
mike

Could. Get some laping compound and see how the used valves seat.

Heh, so think the other valves will be messed up? I really dont want to have to take apart the whole head and get new seals since these are only 1,200 miles old..

Slap the valves in it, and have that head pressure tested. Hate to see you throw together a head, put it on the car and realize the head is cracked.

Did you get a non-Jetvalve head?

I'd have a machinist look at it. To just 'put in' new valves would be doable, but .. it's also a 'while you're there' thing. I'd have it checked out, make the sure head's good, he'll let you know if the two okay valves are in fact okay and the condition of the guides (which you wouldn't want to do) and everything else. Everything in the valvetrain is cheap ($$), I'd pay for a rebuild. Mitsu engines are always blowing up too, supply and demand go up, cash goes down. j/k
That sucks though, how'd that happen .. I remember you buying it .. wasn't it a low-mile peach?

Hey Red,

I'll think I'll do that--any idea how much it would cost? I'm VERY tight with money and I need this car on the road ASAP (my only current car) Would any machinst be able to check? I found some in the next town over. The guy I bought it from neglected to tell me a few things...and as a result I had to buy a new head with one bent valve, which actually came out to be 2...But its in pretty good shape minus teh head, cooling system, and abig dent on the 1/4 panel!

Thanks for the help

Conquest... GRRRR!!!

Dude, look for a race modified head for that car (custom build) or you will have nothing but problems! Went through 3 heads on the conquest we had!

any machinist would be able to tell you, yeah. If you're tight on cash I'd let him know, and if it does need to be rebuilt you can bring him the parts. Sixty bucks in parts, max, head rebuild .. couple hundred or so .. depends on the machinist really .. I know people on here have gotten heads rebuilt for $100ish, but it really depends on a lot of things. Might save a couple of bucks disassembling the head for him, but .. really .. that's only a couple of bucks and if you haven't done it before and if you don't have the tools .. I'd just let him do it

Hey what is the displacement of that TSI engine stock, anyway? My brother had one new and it was quik. Are those DSM's?

2.6L....they are pretty fun cars..Its not officaly a DSM but Mistubishi built it (says it all over the place, engne block says mistu, valve cover, door panels, built in Japan) but marketed as either a Chyrlser or Dodge Conquest or a Mistubishi Starion

Conquest's and Starion's suffer from an ill-fated head design. They have Jetvalves in the combustion chambers. The valves themselve's aren't the problem, its the stainless steel shrouds around them that are set into the aluminum head. Knowing the different expansion rates of metal, you can guess that with enough heat cycles the head begins to suffer from stress cracks. It's worse if you don't thoroughly warm up and cool down your car, as heads can fail pretty quickly that way.

With an S/Q it's not a matter of whether you'll ever have to replace a head, it's a matter of when. But luckily, we've got a pretty good aftermarket for heads, and performance heads start right around $3-400 without the jetvalves, or roughly $7-800 for a nicely dressed head.

Mike,

106k miles, plenty of hard runs, and still has the factory head on it. I've been waiting for my head to go so that I can crack open the block and really start on mods.

I still haven't had the head off that monster, so I really couldn't help you there. Maybe Shelby at Tristarion or SQC could give you some pointers. I just know that you definately want to get it pressure tested, as some cracks won't be visible until the head is warmed up and under pressure.
