Question Offset and Spacers (questions)

How is offset defined? Is it the clearance needed for the brakes?

What are spacers used for? Do they make up for insufficient offset?

I'm in the market for rims and whatever rims I get I would like for them to fill out the wheel wells by moving outward toward the edge of the fenders. Can this be done with spacers on any wheels?

Thanks for your help.

Spacers increase a wheels offset, however your car is late offset which is already further "out" than the earlier cars. In your case the use of a spacer would be limited to a very slight "shim," most of the spacers refered to here are much to large for you and would be used for installing "late" wheels on an "early" car. Keep in mind that spacers are not the best for performance or safety, they are OK for a street car (and then are for looks only) but use on a AX/DE/track car should be carefully thought through ahead of time.

Thanks for the info. The reason I ask is mainly due to looks. I plan on autocrossing my car at least 10 times per year so performance is a major concern of mine. Therefore forget my spacer question.

I'm just trying to identify inexpensive wheels that I can put on my car that would give it a more modern look without being too trendy. I think my car looks great especially in my garage or driveway but when its next to newer cars it just looks old.

How do I attach a picture? I have a picture of a red 968 that looks incredible mainly because the wheels are so nice and because of the way they fit.

I plan on putting a set of autocross tires on my standard rims and carrying them with me to the races.

Thanks,

Mickey

FYI.....offset is defined as the difference between the mounting flange of the wheel and it's centerline. So a wheel with 0 offset will have it's mount at the center.

Mickey:
Have you considered upgrading your wheels to 968 rims? They are available in 16's and 17's.

Gives the car a freshened look, not over stated, and not overly expensive. (Figure around $100 per wheel). Oh, and you don't have to worry about offsets, if you get the 16's: they are the same sizes / offsets as your stock Design 90's. (7Jx16 55mm offset front, 8Jx16 52.3mm offeset rear)

Very nice wheels. I like the fact that they are Porsche wheels also. What is the size and model number you have on your car?

Where can I buy them for $100 per wheel?

Thanks for your help.

Mickey:
I'll check tonight for the wheel codes.

I bought my wheels through here: a local guy upgraded his 968 from 16's to 17's, and sold them to me.

I know Damian is selling his 5-spoke 968 wheels, but they are painted yellow, and he's got new tires on them, so it's a little more than $100/wheel.

Keep a look out here, and in the classifieds section: they come up from time to tim.

Thanks for the info. I'll start looking right now. I want to have autocross wheels and street wheels by the end of March. I'm also going to do some suspension work.
