my hypothesis has always been that the "hop" is a result of the loooong driveshaft sort of "unwinding" as engine torque is released and it "springs back" from being slightly twisted along its length (imagine a 25mm diameter, 1.9-meter-long torsion bar)

Took it for a drive... not the drive shaft as suggested. As soon as I touch the clutch, the hop subsides immediately drive is taken away. It is also more evident when the engine has warmed up.

How are your engine and transmission mounts? Don’t forget the whole power train assembly (engine, torque tube and transmission) is in effect one solid piece on these cars, held in place by only three pieces of rubber.

Just had R/H engine mount replaced due to failure (known fault on the S2)... other mounts were checked by Porsche and deemed ok for their age (no cracking)... and there is no bad vibration in the car at all. Actually, Porsche thought the car was in very good condition given its 250,000kms

Now replaced the Final ICM, and it actually drives even better now, but still some slight bunny-hop at 2000rpm and less when feathering the throttle. I have no cold or warm start issues, no idle issues, no throttle response issues... am I now just being finicky?

You can actually move the bread board (?) by loosening the three screws. This will save you doing the raising/bending thing.

I managed to replace it quite easily in that position without adjusting the metal plate... the hardest part was getting 28yrs of conductive paste unstuck! :P
