Default Big Red Group Buy Details....

Ok, well the Big Red Group Buy details have come in......

We would be going through Chris White, of 944 Enhancements.

Dates: It is going to be open in feb from the 14th to the 28th.
The group buy is for Big Red Calipers, Adaptors, and Turbo 3.6 Rotors
0-4 Buyers: $1050
5-9 Buyers: $1000
10+ Buyers: $950

$125 off with out the adaptors (read M030 suspenions guys)
$50 Dollars extra for the 2 piece rotors

As far as pads go, as we discussed earlier there are no pads included because there are just too many options, there is a discount pad option, going with pads from Beck Arnely brand (a non name brand) for 65 dollars. But Chris can get you what ever pads you want when you order the kit.

If those who are intersted in the group buy could post I would really like to get a head count, or at least an estimate, when you post please list your level of interest........

This kit works for all 87 or later cars, to make this work on later cars you would have to convert over to the later hubs and spindles......

Thanks all (yes I did ask John D. about this).....

Possible Buyer List:
1) Me (100%)
2) Matt H (99.9%)

I know for me this gives me enough time to get my tax return, and this is where i'm spending that money this year.......

Ian - I might have the calipers locally, that it my only issue. One of my racer buddies is swapping his, I am just waiting for him to decide how much he wants, if it is close to the new price then I am going to order it all. Otherwise I will still need adapters and rotors so I will be in, in some fashion.

Just an FYI

You can get the OEM parts at the following prices from Sunset Imports (800-346-0182). Make sure that you ask for the "Excellence" price and that you live outside of Oregon.

928-351-423-03 - 928 GTS Big Black Caliper, L - $274.70
928-351-424-03 - 928 GTS Big Black Caliper, R - $274.70

993-351-425-10 - 993 TT Big Red Caliper, L - $303.19
993-351-426-10 - 993 TT Big Red Caliper, L - $307.84

965-351-045-00 - 911 C2 3.6 Turbo Front Brake Rotor, L - $110.37
965-351-046-00 - 911 C2 3.6 Turbo Front Brake Rotor, R - $110.37

993-351-045-10 - 993 TT 2-Piece Front Brake Rotor, L - $134.63
993-351-046-10 - 993 TT 2-Piece Front Brake Rotor, R - $134.63

So the Big-Reds and 3.6 Turbo rotors would come in at $831.77 + shipping. Add $125 for the adaptors (not available from Sunset) and you're looking at $956.77 + shipping (which might be ~$20-$30).

That's about the price at 10+ buyers without the hassle of having to organize the group buy.

Did Chris White mention any pricing with regards to hats for the 993 TT 2-piece rotors?

Karl - you are not adding the 15% handling fee they charge plus the shipping. When a lister had the door handles sent to my house the handling and shipping (OR to TX) was about 1/4th of the bill.

They charge a 15% handling fee?

If so that is 956.53 cents for just the calipers and rotors through them......

Rich,

There are two way to get big reds onto a 86 951.

1) Convert the hubs and spindles to the later version (you can use your exsisting control arms and keep the early offset, or convert over to late offset with late control arms as I have done)

2) Use custom rotors, and no one seemed to be offering a deal for the 86 944 Turbos, thats why I couldn't get it done for the group buy.....

Not correct Matt.

I'm familiar with ordering from Sunset and I made sure the prices I posted include the 15% markup. I did not include shipping as that varies by location (which is ~$20-$30 by UPS ground in the lower 48 states).

Just to be sure, I'll give Sunset a call tomorrow (Friday) to confirm the price.

I just called Sunset and confirmed that the prices I posted above are the actual sale prices including the +15% markup over dealer-cost.

The prices do not include shipping charges.

So I asked about shipping and they guessed that it would run $25-$45 by UPS ground in the lower-48 for a pair of calipers and a pair of rotors.

If you're interested, I put a web-page together listing all the parts required to put a "Big-Black" (928 GTS) package together at http://www.weissach.net/944S2_BrakeUpgrade.html

The prices quoted on that page were obtained in April 2003 and as you can see, the latest prices are a few % higher today.

The reason I listed 928 Big-Black calipers instead of 993 TT Big-Red calipers are:

* The 928 GTS and 993 TT calipers are basically the same, its just that you don't have to swap the bleeder on the GTS calipers like you do on the TT calipers when installing on a 944/968
* They're slightly cheaper
* Asthetically, I prefer the color black - but that's a personal choice.

As regards rotors, the 3.6 Turbo rotors are less complex to install (you would need to get custom-hats for the 993 TT rotors) and cheaper than the 993 TT rotors.

It should be noted that the price Porsche charges the dealers/retailers for parts can move around quite a lot. Last year, the 968 M030 sway-bars were moving around in price by hundreds from month to month. So don't be surprised if the price quoted on the day you make an order is not exactly the same as posted above - but it probably won't be significantly different.

I highly recommed looking at the brakes section of Tom Pultz's site http://www.944s2.com/

Tom gives an excellent overview of big-brake upgrades for the 944/968.

Thank you for looking into that....

Well this does raise issues with the group buy, all I wanted to accomplish here was to get the best price for all involved and if the buy isn't the way to do that, well it might not go through....

I'll do some checking and get back to the list with a post regarding the status of the buy....
