What security features did the factory incorporate to prevent odometer fraud?

And no I'm not thinking of rolling back the mileage!!

They made it so it would break easily.

Exactly. Almost every car out there has a failed, failing or replaced odometer gear. I put zero faith in the odometer on any car I see and depend on condition and the service records.

I don't know how, but the early models have some internal resistance to backwards spinning. The trip ODO will roll in the negative direction, but the main ODO doesn't seem to move as readily - ie. it jumps rather than spins fluidly backwards.
I know this from experience; while fixing my ODO gear (again, on an early gauge) I figured I'd find out. Hey, at least I was doing the right thing by fixing it.

Good question. I have had my 85.5 gauge cluster apart a few times and I am fully convinced that there is no real protection. When I was in there replacing the odo gear, it looked very easy to change the mileage and then button it all back together.

It is pretty easy on these. Essentially, there is none. I dont know about the early cars but the late ones, there is basically no way to tell.

Most newer cars (where it is not digital) have what is similar to a flywheel lock that "prevents" rolling them back. That also does not work that well.

Hey Tifo,

I apologise, I meant to say that I mostly sell them.

You would think that a british car dealer would be able to spell, wrong, no wonder people question the milage on my used cars. I guess I will have to put it down to a numerological spelling mistake the next time it happens.

P.S I dont want the make over. and I am going to kick santas ***, I asked him for membership for christmasand it never turned up

Nevermind I guess I'll just have to buy it on my wifes credit card number instead.

There are a few dabs of paint but they are in all the wrong spots to identify odometer massaging.

Just did the odometer gear this weekend, and accidentally rolled back a mile. There is NO protection on the 85.5 model. I coulda gotten a drill out and had a 5,000 mile 944 in no time. Kinda sad actually. Even sadder was the fact that I thought about rolling it back at least a little, as who knows how many miles were put on it before I got it, and I figured I was owed a little for all my troubles. Damn being a Boy Scout when I was young. Couldn't bring myself to do it. Oh well, at least I'll be able to sleep at night knowing that I am honest.

i repaired my odometer gear last month and actually added about 800 miles to it - the estimate i had of mileage driven since the gear broke. i could easily have rolled the odometer in the opposite direction. it has zero protection
