your manifolds should be cast iron and can be welded. the PO of my car had the manifolds welded in several places as the 1-4 manifold did not have the reinforcing rib and split in the center. it has held up just fine for over 50k miles now. get them welded, and in the mean time keep your eye out on ebay for a set of back-ups. i found a set in great condition for 40 bucks.

DerSchlechtSpecht does your car have any symptoms? I get exhaust fumes inside the car and a nasty noise in the engine bay that makes me afraid to even start my car but I'm not sure what it is.

The sound of an exhaust leak on the headers sounds like a tick, but kind of like a growl as well. It can sometimes sound metallic. For a long time I thought I had a really bad lifter, found out it was a hole in my manifold, having it fixed soon.
led, here's how I found my cracked manifold. I was doing a wet compression test, and after firing it up, it was just pouring blue smoke out from under the hood. Made it very visible where it was all coming out.
That may not be the best way to find it, but it's definately better than pulling the manifold.
Really, rather than compression testing, you could pour a tiny bit of oil (1/2 or 1/4 teaspoon) into each spark plug hole, would give the same smoking as a wet compression test.
