Default Is this the right DME for my early 944 RoW car?

Hi guys,

About to put all the electrics back together after thorough cleaning and rewiring, and decided to pull the DME to see if any water had got into it, pulled the little plug on the outside and it all looks clean from what I can see. Decided to check out the p/n and I find that it is for a 85.5-87 car. My car is 1983 944 RoW, car was running last year as it was, I am about to start it again today for the first time as my car, and am just wondering if there could be any issues? It obviously works but what could be the differences from the original DME, or am I worrying about nothing.

Thanks

I'm not sure you'll find all of your answers here but if you don't already have it, the Porsche supplied katalog includes which country the part was intended for. https://www.porsche.com/all/media/pd...85_KATALOG.pdf

Thank Curtis, that's great. Found my alternator number in there as well. I have the wrong DME in my car but it runs.

Cheers

I would use the proper coding plug for what parts are on the car such as a catalytic converter, the proper AFM or altitude compensator.

If it runs with the "wrong" DME then you also have the "wrong" AFM. The only loss is the altitude compensation, and the gain is a way better DME. Keep the late stuff.

OKay thanks guys. I am still learning about all of this. I think I read somewhere coding plug is something that plugs into the harness somewhere?? I'll do some more research and find out what I have. Or is it on the board inside the DME. I have pulled them apart for my VW's, same idea, crimp around the edge, I had this one out of the car to inpect it but put it back in as I didn't see any water damage thru the port for the adjustment on the side.

Thanks!!

I did some more research and while I was repairing SPO issues on the harnesses under the dash, I discovered the option plug right at the DME connector, a little white plastic 2 pin plug with nothing connected to it. From the service manuals I have, they show 2 plugs there, one for the characteristic map switch, the other for variant switch, my harness only has one plug. Also the factory service manual shows 944.618.121.02 DME as 85 onward TURBO car. The non turbo 85 on is a 944.618.121.03 or 04. In the tables that show which code plugs are used, there is an X indicating I should have the 944.612.421.00 impedance adapter for my 944.618.121.02 DME in RoW car.

Could someone please shed some new light on the situation please and thanks? Should I be looking for an impedance plug or a new DME or will the Turbo DME be okay in a non turbo car?

Now you see why I am confused.

Cheers
