Default Plastigage...Where to Find?

I'm planning on doing my rod bearings soon, and I was wondering where people have found plastigage. Any local places carry it?

Also, I'm replacing my oil pan gasket at the same time. Anyone have recommendations on what, if any, sealants should be used? I believe what Porsche recommends is like $100 a tube!
I tried searching, but didn't really get any conclusive results.

Thanks,

Conor

I got mine at AutoZone. Ask for the green stuff.

for the sealant, use LOCTITE 473 (I think that's the number). it's expensive but it's OEM and any Porsche tech will tell ya to use it. I think it's $40.00 for a small tube, but it'll cover the crank frame and the oil pan gasket and the oil pump. you can get that at performance products or Pelican, or even Lindsey racing. that's where I got mine. www.lindseyracing.com it's cheap there.

Damn, I wish I thought to order that earlier. I just ordered struts from Lindsey today.

Thanks for the help,

Conor

Yeah, most auto parts places will have Plastigauge.

If they don't know what you are talking about, they probably get it from Federal Mogul under the Sealed Power brand. The stuff I used was from Federal Mogul. It's the same stuff as Plastigauge an I'd wager Plastigauge makes it for Federal Mogul.

I got my from my local doofus auto parts place and if they carry it, any decent place should carry it. I used to be the Inventory Accounting Manager for Big A Auto Parts and we even carried plenty of the stuff.

There was a recent thread on replacing the pan gasket and installing studs to avoid the dreaded gasket bulge.

Conor, look for the thread Ben mentions in the Turbo section on oil pan, you don't need any of that expensive sealer at all.

NAPA has Plastigauge. Follow the directions exactly for proper results.

The oil pan thread was over on the turbo board. Anderson has a really good solution to the bulge problem. Use the search function to find it.

but what about sealing the crank frame to the block? it is NECESSARY to make the engine run propperly. may not be necessary on the oil pan, but it is on the crank frame, oil pump, and balance shaft housings.
