Unhappy How to give yourself a heart attack...

I learned something new today.

I checked the Carrera's oil, and it was a few quarts low. So, I topped it off. I also had to put more air in the tires, so I had the car idleing so that the cigarette lighter would have power.

I went to take the old girl out for a quick spin, and as soon as I left my driveway the car hesitated and low and behold my rear-view mirror is filled with smoke! I pull the car over and make a panic-filled call to my P-mechanics.

"Did you add oil?"

"Yes..."

"What proceedure did you use to check the oil?"

"Same as most other cars..."

"EEEERRRRRRRGGGGHHH!!!! You see, the 911 has a dry-sump oil system, and not a wet sump, therefore..."

So, hey, all I have to do is to let her cool off and drain out a few quarts. No biggie. Now that my heart has restarted...

BB.

I did the same thing with my father 964..... After I changed the oil and drove it around town I threw up this huge smoke screen when I stopped, I was so worried that I just ruined my dad's new (to him) 964 Turbo.....

Same thing happened to a friend of mine who had just sold his 911 Cab. Buyers picked it up here in TN to drive back to Canada, thought the oil was low when they stopped along the way and added some to it....was dripping oil and smoking and they called him up and were majorly upset. He was smart enough to be calm and not too mean to them and they discovered what had happened and gave him a big apology about the whole thing.

Luckily it doesn't blow them up to do that!!

Don't feel too bad, that is a pretty common mistake. Did they tell you to make sure it is never too full for spirited driving? Many people run under "full."

I thought it was under full. Of course, I'd imagine I was wrong... Fortunately, I haven't been driving it all that spiritedly.

Sid: basically, the car has to be idling on flat ground at operating temperature.

Anywho, I drained out some of the oil and drove it around a bit to clear out all of the oil in the exhaust. I must have fumigated the entire county... And I still have about a half-quart to go.

Oooch.

I wouldn't have thought that. Checking oil while running.

I think ( could be wrong ) that those first two words were

"oh ****!"

Honestly, I don't really remember exactly what my first words were. I was too busy trying to figure out how the hell I was going to explain that I destroyed another 911 engine. I was also somewhat confused by the fact that the smoke was white, which is normally burning coolant...

I never would have either, but I should have looked in to it. There are so many screwey things about the way they did this car that it's dangerous to make assumptions...
