Andrew:

The 951, which is what I am most familiar with, has two ground wires at the rear of the engine. One attaches to the block and the other to the bellhousing.

I was thinking about this last night and want to suggest looking at the timing belt. I understand that many of them break on start up. I know it might be off the course you are pursuing now but since you have spark and fuel and you heard a metal on metal sound I think it might be worth looking into.
